Critic Dan Kleinman puts it well when he says the problem with the ALA is that it has “changed from an organization that helped communities and used common sense into one that just promotes a view.”

Kleinman last month launched an alternative to the ALA, the World Library Association, which he said will offer new policy guidelines for libraries. “We’re going to return things to commonplace, community standards,” Kleinman said.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) picked an unusual foil during a Judiciary Committee hearing this week about the historic rise in challenges to school books. When it was his turn to question witnesses, he called up a video of Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. .... “What we saw here was someone saying the quiet part out loud,” he said. “The goal is to sexualize children — to provide minors with sexually explicit material ... and then hide this content from the parents.” .... “I have been reporting on this for 24 years,” [Dan Kleinman of World Library Association] said. “Now they’re listening. They’re finally listening.”
